Treaty Of Waitangi Workshop 

WHEN: 10:00am-3:30pm, Wednesday 7 August 

The focus of this workshop is to support and assist groups to enquire and explore how to build relationship and accountability in partnership with Maori, in Aotearoa today. 

This workshop will utilise a powerful DVD on the history of and to the current day of the Treaty of Waitangi to discuss and develop a practical response to the concept of true partnership in Aotearoa New Zealand.

This workshop is presented by Hilary Star-Foged from LEAD: the Centre for NFP Leadership.

Antenatal Course

Free antenatal course for expectant parents run by the Helensville Birthing Centre. Lactation consultant Debbie Tetlow  will be taking the course, which will run for three consecutive Saturday mornings at Te Whare Oranga ō Parakai.

It's recommended for women who are around 24-28 weeks pregnant.

The course will look at everything from how to keep healthy during your pregnancy, to pain relief options in labour, and finally what happens when baby is here, including breastfeeding.

New mums are encouraged to bring their partner or other whānau member with them for support. 

       1st series - 16 & 23 February and 2 March  

       2nd series - 4, 11 & 18 May 

       3rd series - 15, 22 & 29 June 

       4th series  - 10, 17 & 24 August 

       5th series - 5, 12 & 19 October  

       6th series - 23 & 30 November and 7 December

Helensville Birthing Centre Coffee Group 

If you’re a parent of a baby or toddler and would like to meet others for a regular friendly catch-up then come to the Helensville Birthing Centre Coffee Group,

Every second Thursday morning at Te Whare Oranga ō Parakai. Guest speakers make regular appearances, on everything from Maori natural medicine, pregnancy massage and postnatal depression.

The coffee group isn’t just for mums. Dads, grandparents and other caregivers are welcome too.

When: Weekly course begins 6.30-9.30pm, Thursdays from March 2019.  

Programme overview:

If you want to learn some basic Māori language this is the perfect place to start. Our fun, relaxed and inclusive approach to te reo Māori is for people of all ages and ethnicities. Whether you want to use te reo Māori at home with the kids or in the workplace, this interactive programme will have you speaking with confidence in no time.

Te Ara Reo Māori has become a national institution, attended by newsreaders, public figures, teachers, school principals and business people. Join the movement and learn to love and use te reo Māori every day!

You'll learn about:

  • pronunciation
  • tikanga
  • introductions
  • basic vocabulary
  • basic sentence structures
  • correctly pronounce Māori words, names and place names
  • use basic greetings and introduce yourself
  • understand and follow tikanga (protocols)
  • sing some waiata
  • use Māori words with confidence
  • understand basic sentence structures

Where will this take me?

I want to keep studying

Take this to the next level with Te Ara Reo Māori Level 4, or dive into total immersion with Te Pūtaketanga o te Reo.

I want to use my qualification

These te reo skills will be useful in everyday life in Aotearoa. They'll also be great if you work in education, Māori organisations, media or anywhere you deal with the public.

How you'll study:

  • noho Marae and wānanga
  • programme delivered in English

Entry criteria:

You can enrol if you already have a qualification at Level 3 or above.

Programme overview:

If you know the basics of te reo Māori and want to take it further, here's your next step. Our safe, encouraging and interactive programme is loved by people from all cultures and backgrounds.

Develop a greater understanding of the Māori culture while you practice and build confidence in your Māori language skills.  

You'll learn about:

  • active and negative sentence structures
  • extending your vocabulary
  • using different tenses
  • distinguishing between Māori and non-Māori sentence structures. 

Where will this take me?

I want to keep studying

Move into full immersion with Te Rōnakitanga ki te reo Kairangi Level 5, or progress to our te reo degree, Te Paritūtanga o te Reo.

I want to use my qualification

You can put your te reo Māori skills to use in most jobs in Aotearoa.

How you'll study:

  • attend classes
  • noho Marae and wānanga
  • programme delivered in reo rua (English & Māori). 

Entry criteria:

You'll need to: 

  • complete Te Ara Reo Māori Level 2, or
  • successfully complete a pre-entry assessment.

Hearing Clinics

If you’re Māori with a hearing impairment and unable to afford a hearing aid then this hearing clinic could set you on the path to better hearing.

Hearing Auckland is holding regular clinics at Te Whare Oranga ō Parakai throughout 2019. 

If you fit the criteria they’ll provide a free full hearing service and if required free hearing aids.

Appointments are a must and there are strict criteria for eligibility. For more information contact Hearing Auckland 09 5249847 and they will talk you through the criteria and direct you to a Hearing Pathfinder based in Helensville.
