South Kaipara Food Revolution

The South Kaipara Food Revolution was an idea germinated by Peter Brennan, Simon Webb and Arohanui Grace.  They along with many others have long known that the South Kaipara's local growers and producers are usually seperated by large distances and limited infrastructure.  The vision for the South Kaipara Food Revolution is a sustainable social enterprise that brings producers, growers and farmers together for individual and collective benefit.

The South Kaipara Food Revolution will:

  • Bring together like-minded gardeners to share skills, seeds, equipment, labour and experience.
  • Encourage and foster people's ability to add value to products.
  • Enable education and training opportunities.
  • Grow community connections, pride and collaboration.
  • Utilise and build on existing strengths and opportunities.
  • Generate income through a mechanism for collecting, selling and distributing fresh local produce.
  • Nurture the people of Parakai and the South Kaipara through greater economic, social, cultural and environmental wellbeing.

Te Whare Oranga ō Parakai is the headquarters for the South Kaipara Food Revolution, and upon opening in March 2015 will provide a professional teaching kitchen and fully functioning and certified commercial kitchen available for use and hire.  

It is envisaged that anyone in the community who wants to produce artisan foods can make use of this amazing facility. Courses in relevant food safety standards will be available for producers, cooks and interested individuals.

A monthly Harvest Market launched in March 2015 at Te Whare Oranga ō Parakai, with its fabulous indoor and outdoor spaces providing an ideal location rain or shine.
